Environment: Canvas by Instructure
Introducing Canvas
First-time login
- In a web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc.), go to ngu.instructure.com.
- Sign in with your Microsoft SSO credentials (NGU email, password, MFA method).
- If you experience issues signing in with your NGU account, contact ITS.
- The first time you sign into Canvas, you will be prompted to read and agree to the Acceptable Use Policy.
Canvas dashboard
The first page you will see when signing into Canvas is the dashboard, which shows your courses, upcoming dates, and links to other sections in Canvas.
Your dashboard may be blank (like the screenshot below). Courses will appear in your dashboard once you've been assigned a role in a course.
- If your dashboard is blank but you are in an active course and you believe there should be courses here, contact NGU's registrar.

In Canvas, there are two kinds of courses that will appear in your dashboard:
- Published courses. These are viewable by any students or instructors enrolled or assigned to the course.
- Unpublished courses. These are only viewable by instructors.
- Note: Any of your "course shells" that were copied from Blackboard will appear as unpublished courses.
More information
- Blackboard course migration: Course shells copied from Blackboard are copied into Canvas and show up in the "Default Term".
- Course visibility: Courses are visible when the registrar activates the applicable term. Canvas and JICS (the "My NGU portal") share the same term schedule.
- Instructor access: All instructors are added to courses by the registrar. If you are an instructor and do not have access to your course, contact your academic administrative assistant. [LIST BELOW]
- Student access: Students get access to registered courses 10 days before the start of the term.
