Software Updates

First- and third-party updates

Microsoft-issued updates are generally released by Microsoft on the second Tuesday of each month at 2 p.m. and often require a computer restart to complete installation. When a restart is needed, users will receive advance notifications and have the ability to choose a convenient restart time.

  • Your device will notify you when updates require a restart and will ask to select a time to restart.
  • The notification may give an estimate of how long the updates will take to install.

Third-party software updates are released on each vendor’s schedule and may occur at any time. In most cases, updates are installed silently in the background without interrupting your work. When a restart is required, you can finish what you are doing before closing and reopening the application. If you are actively using the application, it will not be forced to close unexpectedly.

  • Your device will notify you with updates are downloading and installing.
